Petition launched in Vancouver to ban shark fins in Canada

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Federal NDP fisheries critic Fin Donnelly was in Vancouver today to launch a petition urging Ottawa to ban the importation of shark fins to Canada.

Donnelly says millions of sharks are killed each year, mostly for their fins, and the federal government needs to take action to protect the creatures.

Donnelly was joined by Rob Stewart, the director of the documentary Sharkwater, who says a global response is desperately needed to help save the sharks, in the same way a ban on the ivory trade has protected elephants.

Several Ontario cities, including Toronto, have already banned shark fins.
