Women’s-only shelter to open Monday

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – A women’s-only emergency shelter will open new, low-barrier beds on the Downtown Eastside tomorrow. A total of 26 spaces will be available at the St. James Community Service Society.
The shelter will operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week and it will provide meals along with access to support services. This year women needing a warm bed can access the shelter at Powell Street near Gore.
The goal is to help women and children find secure housing or treatment options. In the last two years the St. James Community Service Society says 40 to 50 per cent of its users have been successfully placed in more permanent housing.
The location is temporary until the provincial government finds a more permanent location that can hold up to 52 beds.
