Public inquest into VPD shooting death

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The BC Coroners Service will hold a public inquest into the death of Michael Vann Hubbard. The homeless man was shot by the VPD downtown in March 2009.

Van Hubbard was holding a box cutter when he got into an argument with two officers near Homer and Pender Streets when he was shot once. He died there in the street. The officers were not carrying tasers.

Abbotsford Police investigated the incident, recommending no charges against the VPD.

The inquest will not make any legal findings against the police, but Coroner Lisa Graham and a jury will hear evidence surrounding the death to make recommendations to prevent similar situations in the future.

It will happen in late April of next year at the Coroners Court in Burnaby.
