BC Lions show off Grey Cup

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – More than 8,000 BC Lions fans returned to the site of the team’s Grey Cup victory, to celebrate with the club on Wednesday.

Three days after the championship, it was also a chance for the coaches and players to say thank you to the hometown fans who have helped BC go undefeated in six games at the newly re-opened BC Place. That includes a playoff victory over Edmonton, and the Grey Cup defeat of Winnipeg.

Centre Angus Reid took the microphone and told the crowd they are a big part of the home field advantage. “We’re here for you guys, and we’re here because of you guys. You make this great, you make this place our dome!”

Hardeep Jheeta was among the thousands of fans who returned to BC Place last night. With her face painted up like a lion, the mother of two says being at the stadium for Sunday’s win gave her one of the happiest moments of her life.

“Keron Williams lifted me onto the field and I was actually under the confetti when they lifted the Cup and I’ll remember that moment till my dying day,” she tells us.

Jonas Granander, who worked on the stadium renovation project, also went to BC Place for the celebration.

“Quite a tearjerker actually, when I was watching [the Grey Cup] on television. I was like, ‘Man I’m so happy that we got the work done on time, and people are actually able to enjoy it, and the BC Lions won at the same time,'” he says.

PavCo‘s David Podmore oversaw the retrofit of BC Place Stadium, and told fans the re-opening has gone better than they could have imagined. “If we were to write a script for this, I don’t think we could have done it better. It was a Disney finish.”

Coach and GM Wally Buono also expressed his appreciation for the support shown to the team, even after an 0-5 start. He gave no hints about whether he will be back on the sidelines with club next season.
