Immigration minister to make announcement regarding citizenship fraud

By

OTTAWA – The federal government is expected to announce what’s being called the biggest citizenship fraud sweep in Canadian history.

Immigration Minister Jason Kenney has a news conference scheduled for 10 a.m. in Montreal, Que.

Postmedia said the federal government is set to crack down on 4,700 people believed to have obtained citizenship or permanent resident status illegally.

The announcement comes six months after the government moved to strip 1,800 people of their Canadian citizenship or permanent resident status for the same reasons.

Letters are currently being sent to the 6,500 people from 100 countries indicating that Canada is revoking their citizenship or permanent resident status due to fraud.

Prior to 2010, Canada has only stripped citizenship from 67 people since the Citizenship Act came into effect in 1947.
