Toronto Filipino community devastated by flooding; donations and aid needed for survivors

By

The cleanup continues as the death toll continues to rise in the Philippines, where flash floods left hundreds dead after Tropical Storm Washi slammed into a coastal region of the nation.

Thousands are in need of aid and at least 652 people have been confirmed dead, while an estimated 800 more are still missing.

The news of the storm and resulting flash floods has left the 100,000 plus members of Toronto’s Filipino community devastated, with officials estimating more than 100,000 people in the Asian nation have been affected.

Members of the Filipino community are already sending supplies and money back to their native country, and requesting others do the same.

Anna Lindenfors, from Save the Children, is in the Philippines and told 680News the cleanup is a two stop process.

“We’re assessing the situation so that our response will be the most relevant one, we’re also preparing the supplies so that we can come in and actually do the response for children and their families,” Lindenfors said.

She adds the children and their families are currently in need of clothing, blankets, cooking utensils and most importantly, clean water.
