Teen dies after taking ecstasy with friends at a sleepover

By

ABBOTSFORD (NEWS1130) – A 17-year-old girl from Abbotsford has died after she took some ecstacy with her friends at a sleepover last weekend. Cheryl McCormack was using the drug to control her weight.

McCormack was taken to the hospital in critical condition after she had a bad reaction to the drug on Saturday. She died five days later.

Her friends were also looked at as a precaution but they’re all fine. Cst. Ian MacDonald with Abbotsford Police says teenage girls don’t just use ecstacy to get high, “[Ecstacy is used] for the purpose of controlling their weight and unfortunately this has lead to a tragic circumstance to a family and lots of friends just before Christmas time.”

Cst. Ian MacDonald says this isn’t the first young person to have a bad reaction to ecstasy this month, “It’s happening in other jurisdictions and involving Abbotsford kids. Some have gone to hospital and regrettably we have heard of teens in Abbotsford and elsewhere dying.”

Police are now trying to track down where the girls got the drugs from.

Anyone with information about where the drugs were acquired should call the APD at 604-859-5225 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
