Third shooting in Surrey over the holidays

SURREY (NEWS1130) – The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team has confirmed a deadly shooting at Ken’s Grocery on 96 Ave. between 116 St. and 117B St. in Surrey.

Just before 4:30 p.m. on Christmas Day, Mounties received a call about a man with gun shot wounds.  Twenty-seven-year-old Alok Gupta was taken to a nearby hospital, but was pronounced dead when he arrived.

Sgt. Jennifer Pound says Gupta was working as a good deed to the owners who wanted to celebrate Christmas together.

“It’s beyond a tragedy when a good deed turns into the loss of someone’s life.  It’s absolutely devastating for this to happen at any time. Christmas does not make it any better. You can well imagine what his family is now going through.”

Investigators don’t know the motive and are looking for any clues which could indicate a robbery.

This is the third shooting in Surrey in two days.  A 28-year-old man died while at a house party on Christmas Eve and a 54-year-old woman is recovering in hospital after getting shot on King George Boulevard early Sunday morning.

Pound says people have a right to be shocked by the violence over Christmas.  “It’s clear a lot of people don’t have a regard for public safety, let alone at a time when families are coming together.  For that reason alone, we’re telling people to come forward if they have any information.”

If you have any information about any of the shootings, you can contact the IHIT tipline by calling 1.877.551.IHIT (4448) or call CrimeStoppers at 1.800.222.8477.
