SkyTrain gates now in the works

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Construction on SkyTrain fare gates is in full swing; by this time next year, you will be using them.

According to Ken Hardie with TransLink, you can already see where things are going to go. “Right now, the fare gate construction is underway at most of the SkyTrain stations — the original Expo Line stations.

“You can go to them and see work underway to make room for the fare gate arrays that are going to be installed probably later this year,” he tells us.

Hardie explains they need to accommodate the size of gates to go in and out. “The entrances are being changed, making room for the gates. You’ll be using the gates when you go into the stations and when you come out of them.”

A pilot project for the new transit fare cards will start in September or October. We should see a full working fare gate system in place at the start of 2013.
