Shelters desperate for donations

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Despite the freezing temperatures and snow last night some shelters were not full last night.  The Union Gospel Mission was not close to capacity.

They filled 61 of a possible 72 beds, which the UGM says is quite high given there were so many shelters open last night.

The organization’s Keela Keeping says they have an extra 20 beds available as well.  She says they’ll also be hitting the streets handing out gloves, toques, scarves and blankets.  “This is the first year we’ve had donations down a bit more.  I’m not really sure why, it hasn’t been as cold so it’s probably not on people’s minds as much.”

Right now they’re putting together extreme weather kits they hope to start handing out on Monday, if they get more donations.  “We are asking people in the city, if you’ve got some extra gloves, extra blanket, or some extra funds to help us purchase our special emergency blankets that keep people dry.”
