VPD apologizes to man hurt in mistaken identity arrest

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Vancouver Police are apologizing to a man who was injured in a mistaken identity arrest.

It happened Thursday morning while police were following another man who appeared to be trying to break into a bank near Joyce and Kingsway. They lost sight of him as he ran between some houses.

A little later, an officer arrested a man wrongly-thought to be the suspect in a yard on Stamford Street. Police say the 51-year-old man had to be taken to hospital with sore ribs and abrasions to his face. He’s now recovering at home.

The VPD’s Professional Standards Section is investigating, and the Office of the Police Complaint Commissioner has been notified. Apologies have been extended to the family by several senior members of the Vancouver Police Department, and the assistance of the Victim Services Unit has been offered.

The person seen pulling on the bank doors was later found and later released without charges.
