Tim Hortons introduces new cup size

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – As you sipped your morning coffee, how much was in that cup?  News1130‘s Mike Lloyd is trying to make it to the bottom of his after ordering some of the new extra larges at Tim Hortons.

“I’m feeling pretty jittery, a little sweaty and, actually, pretty sloshy,” says Mike, after starting into his second tower of java.

The new extra large at Tim Hortons is 24 fluid ounces and, by some measurements, packs 240 milligrams of caffeine (more than half the recommended daily maximum).

By comparison, that is 20 per cent larger than a hot drink venti at Starbucks, which is 20 fluid ounces, and three times the size of what is now an extra small coffee at Tim Hortons.

“As I walked out of the local Tim Hortons this morning with a stack of two trays of the new extra large for the newsroom, people were actually laughing.  I nearly drained all the fresh pots,” he says while trying to see if it’s possible to drink two or more through a morning.

Talking to coffee drinkers on Broadway in Vancouver, most admitted they would not order such a large cuppa joe, with a few exceptions.

“Hells yeah!  Give me two,” laughs Jeff, a post-secondary student and admitted caffeine junkie. “When I’m studying I’d do that.”

“Absolutely not.  Not a chance in hell,” says another man. “It seems very American that somebody would want something that big.  If you look at the super-sized food and super-sized drinks that they serve at some of the fast food locations in the States, it’s pretty comparable.”

The average human stomach only holds about 33 fluid ounces comfortably.

Mike, by the way, made it through one and a half extra large coffees before calling it quits and taking a few extra bathroom breaks.
