‘Old Guard’ dismissed missing women theories: detective

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – A Vancouver police officer says she is frustrated attempted murder and unlawful confinement charges laid against Robert Pickton in 1997 were dropped.

Pickton picked up the sex trade worker, known only as Ms. Anderson, in 1997 and took her to his farm for sex, only to brutally attack her afterward. She barely escaped alive.

The Crown later dropped the charges against Pickton, saying the woman wasn’t a credible witness, but Det. Const. Lori Shenher says she spoke to her personally and thinks she was.

“Both [Coquitlam RCMP] Cpl. Mike Connor and I felt that, had she died, as morbid a thought as it is, but had she died we probably would have had a slam dunk murder conviction without her testimony,” Shenher says.

Shenher says suggesting a serial killer was at work to her peers was a tough go.

“It seems as though the more experienced people were around the table the less appreciation there was that we very well were dealing with a serial killer,” she says. “It was almost, like, you know, you’ve read too many detective novels, you’ve seen too many movies.”

Pickton was eventually arrested in 2002.
