Students get big hits with “S#*t SFU Says” YouTube clip

BURNABY (NEWS1130) – You’ve probably heard of “S#*t Girls Say” or its legion of imitators; now we’ve got “S#*t SFU Says.” It’s the latest installment in the viral video phenomenon.

Julian Fok directed the 1:47 piece which hit 50,000 views on YouTube in just four days.

“I’m a little surprised we hit it before the six-day mark or so it’s great! [There’s] so much support from friends and even internationally; it’s been tweeted all around,” he boasts.

Fok points out UBC’s version of the video took six days to hit the 50,000-view mark. He insists it’s not just about competition, but admits he and his crew were inspired by the earlier video and thought they could do better.

“If you went to UBC, you’d understand it… But as a general person, you wouldn’t understand most of the jokes. They were getting a lot of views so we figured, heck, why not try it out?” he explains.

“S#*t SFU Says” references familiar aspects of life at Simon Fraser, like the many steps on the Burnaby Mountain campus and questions why the Academic Quadrangle isn’t named the Academic Square instead.

Fok tells us response around the university has been very positive. “People love it, [they’re] coming up to the actors — Wesley [Wang] and Matt [Tse] — and they recognize them already. There’s a lot of love about it and people can relate to it.”

“We’re going to be doing another video,” he reveals. “We don’t know if we’re going to be doing another ‘S#*t SFU Says,’ but something along [those] lines. Hopefully it will get the same kind of results.”
