VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The police complaints commissioner is still pressing for a public inquiry into the VPD beating of an innocent man.
Stan Lowe is appealing a BC Supreme Court ruling that said he overstepped his bounds by calling for the inquiry.
Deputy Police Complaints Commissioner Rollie Woods says his office had no choice but to appeal. “This case is an important case and the principle of the commissioner being able to order public hearings when he feels it’s necessary… this decision limits that power.”
Yao Wei Wu was beaten bloody by two Vancouver Police constables who thought he was someone else two years ago. He suffered bad injuries to his face.
The department apologized and the officers were cleared, but Lowe thought there were flaws in the case.
Wu is suing the department in civil court.
