Stanley Park petting goats may have been sold for dog food

LANGLEY (NEWS1130) – A Langley hobby farmer could be facing legal action after allegedly selling petting goats he received from the now closed Stanley Park Farmyard, some of them to a dog food producer.

Just over a year ago, the petting zoo turned the animals over to the farmer, who was under contract to let the goats live their lives out peacefully on the farm. Records show 13 goats were auctioned off.

Park board chair Constance Barnes says they have made contact with the hobby farmer. “We had staff go out and talk with him. He’s extremely evasive. So we will be looking at holding this person accountable,” she insists.

Concern now turns to the other goats the farmer adopted. “The SPCA has gone out to take a look at the property. They’ve seen the other four goats. They are not in distress, so they weren’t in a position to remove them from the property,” Barnes explains.

She says she has ordered a review of all of the adoptions and is looking into legal action against the farm.

NPA Park Board Commissioner Melissa De Genova doesn’t like how this has been handled. She says the Board did thorough background checks on potential owners

“This should have been avoided,” says De Genova. “I’m extremely unhappy to think that goats I used to pet as a child are now in tins on peoples shelves.”

De Genova says some of the sheep and goats sent to the hobby farms are still alive.

“I would hope the Park Board would be able to take those back as soon as possible and at least have emergency shelter until we can find a good home for them.”

The Park Board is now checking with the other adoption homes to see how the remaining farmyard animals are doing.
