VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – A young mother is Vancouver’s second murder victim of the year after she was shot and killed in her basement suite Tuesday night.

Her ex-husband, 31-year-old “Andy” Long Phi Nguyen, who is known to police, has been charged with  first-degree murder and attempted murder.

Vancouver Police say the mother’s children were feet away but her family managed to disarm the man and hold him until officers arrived.

Const. Lindsey Houghton says officers were called to a basement suite on E. Georgia St. near Cassiar St. around 6 p.m. on Tuesday.

“Officers arrived to find that a woman had been shot and her family members, who had been in another part of the house at the time of the shooting, had not only disarmed the suspect but taken the suspect into custody and were holding him for police,” he says.

The victim is 30-year old Jenny Lee Wong, a mother to a five-year old girl and a three-year old boy.

Houghton says another man was in the suite when Wong was gunned down.

“Officers also discovered that an adult acquaintance of the victim, who had been in the basement suite at the time with the victim, had been shot at, fortunately only suffering minor injuries after being grazed by a bullet.”

“He is known to police but there does not appear to be any record of any domestic-related violence,” Houghton says.

He wouldn’t elaborate on the nature of the relationship between the man who was shot at and Wong.

“This is a tragic incident that will leave lasting scars, not only on these two children, who are now without their mother, but on all the family members, and I know many neighbours, and even friends of the children,” Houghton adds.

Victim Services workers have been called in and Houghton says the Vancouver School Board has brought in staff to help teachers and classmates of Wong’s young daughter.
