VICTORIA (NEWS1130) – There is now more protection for sled dogs in BC.
The province, industry, vets and SPCA have jointly created Canada’s first Sled Dog Code of Practice.
It creates requirements for things like containment, health, working conditions and euthanasia of the dogs that are enforceable by law.
The standards are part of the government’s response to public outrage after an estimated 100 healthy sled dogs were killed by an employee of a company in Whistler when business slumped after the Olympics tourism boom. The killings were not revealed until eight months later.
The standards will come into effect between now and Oct. 1.
