Parks chair fuming after trees cropped in Capilano Park

NORTH VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Mounties and Metro Vancouver Parks are trying to figure out who cut down or lopped the tops off of about 35 trees in Capilano Regional Park, and suspect it may have been done to improve someone’s view.

Metro Vancouver Parks Committee Chair Heather Deal isn’t hiding her feelings.

“I’m quite angry about this. Those trees belong to the public, they belong to the region,” she said.

She says the trees that were cut line private property.

“It may have been in someone’s view. We don’t know yet, that’s part of the criminal investigation, but I can tell you this much: When we got to the top of that slope, which took a bit of a scramble, there was a brand new view opened up… It’s never acceptable to cut a tree down in a park, but to do so for a view is absolutely disgusting.”

Slope stability may now be in question and the trees are so damaged that few will survive.

The cleanup bill — at taxpayers’ expense — could reach $50,000.

Deal says it would have made a lot of noise, and is appealing for anyone who knows anything to tip off police.

“Some of this was done in the middle of the night. Some of it was done with chainsaws. Someone will know something,” she says. “Please let the North Shore RCMP know. I don’t think you have to leave your name even, that will be up to them, but most imporantly, do it for the sake of the park.”
