NEWARK, NJ (NEWS1130) – Cory Schneider turned aside 30 of the 31 shots fired his way and Mason Raymond scored the eventual game-winner 2:07 into the second period as the Vancouver Canucks beat the New Jersey Devils 2-1.

Despite arriving in the early hours of the morning following their win over the Detroit Red Wings on Thursday night, the Canucks started the game strong. A pinching Aaron Rome picked up a rebound off of a Chris Tanev point shot and beat Martin Brodeur to open the scoring 8:44 into the first period.

The Devils responded after the Rome goal, outshooting the Canucks 5-0 through the rest of the first period to lead 8-6 in the shot department through 20 minutes, but Vancouver took a 1-0 lead into the break.

The Canucks gave themselves a bit of a cushion when Raymond took a drop-pass from David Booth and beat Brodeur blocker side to make it 2-0 on Vancouver’s first shot of the second period.

New Jersey got on the board just past the midway mark of the second period. A Patrick Elias centring pass deflected off Adam Clarkson and past Schneider to cut the Canucks’ lead to 2-1.

Vancouver came inches away from restoring its’ two-goal lead late in the middle period when Chris Higgins fired a shot off the post while shorthanded.

The Devils picked up the pace in the third period, outshooting the Canucks 10-5 in the final frame, but they couldn’t beat Schneider for the equalizer.

Schneider faced nearly double the amount of pucks that Brodeur did, as the Canucks were outshot 31-16.
