MPs debating NDP motion to give Elections Canada greater audit powers

MPs are currently debating an NDP motion which calls for legislation to give Elections Canada greater audit powers.

The motion, introduced by MP David Christopherson, would give the agency the power to force parties to provide documents which support their financial claims.

In addition, it calls for telecommunications companies who do voter contract work during election campaigns, to register with Elections Canada, while also calling for tighter regulations on robocall clients.

The federal government did an about-face on Wednesday and said it would support the motion.
