Tree crashes through mansion during windstorm (photos)

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – If the worst of the windstorm only brought you a little extra yard work, consider yourself lucky.

Some homeowners and landlords may be making insurance claims after Monday’s gusts in excess of 90 km/h.

A massive cedar once rooted on Damean’s property toppled over and crashed through the third floor of his neighbour’s 16th Ave. home in Vancouver.

“We were sleeping here, that’s my bedroom up there,” he points to the third floor of his own home. “I thought it was hail but it suddenly stopped and when I looked through the window I saw this big tree falling down.”

He’s feeling pretty relieved because it landed just meters between his bedroom, where he was sleeping, and the curb where his car was parked.

“I could have had a serious injury to myself or lost my car, though of course the car is better than myself. I just said, ‘well thank God it didn’t fall in my room.'”

Damean realizes his neighbour may not be so lucky.

“He’s not even home,” he says, “so there will be a big surprise when he gets back.”

A home in the Delbrook area of North Vancouver was damaged in a similar way when part of a tree snapped loose and fell on its roof, causing damage to the second floor and the chimney.

Elsewhere fallen trees and wires cluttered roads while debris could be seen flying around.
