Canadian employers upbeat about second-quarter hiring: Manpower survey

By

Canadian employers expect the hiring climate to remain upbeat in the second quarter, according to the latest Manpower Employment Outlook Survey.

In a survey of 1,900 employers, 21 per cent said they plan to increase payrolls in the second quarter while five per cent said they anticipate cutbacks.

Of those surveyed, 72 per cent of employers replied that they expect to maintain current staffing levels while two per cent were unsure of their intentions in the upcoming quarter.

Manpower said the upbeat outlook is driven by the mining industry sector where efforts are underway in Alberta to develop the largest oil field outside the Middle East.

With Target’s plan to expand into Canada and Wal-Mart’s efforts to compete, Manpower said employers in the wholesale and retail trade sector also anticipate an “upbeat hiring climate.”
