Cop did right in owning up to to distracted driving: group

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – A group campaigning to make distracted driving as unacceptable as driving while drunk is applauding a high-ranking VPD officer for owning up to his own mistake.

Deputy Chief Warren Lemcke admitted he was using his cell phone when his car rear-ended another vehicle on Highway 99 two months ago.

Karen Bowman with Drop It And Drive hopes people take away the appropriate lesson from this. “My hope is this won’t be used as ‘Well if he’s doing it, then it’s okay for the rest of us.’ I really think we should look to how he’s responded to the situation and is taking full responsibility.”

“He’s using it as a lesson for other people to look to him; if someone with his level of extended driver training can get into a collision with a moment’s inattention, do you really think it won’t happen to you as well?” adds Bowman.

She feels you should cut police officers some slack when it comes to distracted driving,  particularly if the call is related to their jobs.
