Reduce the playoff party booze: London Drugs pres

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – We’ll be hearing from the City of Vancouver next week on how it plans to ward off a riot during the playoffs this year.
The president of London Drugs believes reducing the number of drunks gathered for the occasion should be a major priority.
Wynne Powell says he’d be happy to see some sort of liquor control or checks as people gather into the downtown core.
“The amount of liquor that’s available should be carefully considered and whether liquor can be carried on SkyTrain should be considered.”
More restrictions on the sale of alcohol during such large events and on the transport of booze by people using transit were two recommendations made by an independent post-riot report.
“I think that’s going to be an important element, because it became painfully obvious to me that liquor was a major factor in causing that exuberance. I think we have to find a way to temper that access,” he says.
London Drugs incurred $250,000 worth of damage during last year’s Stanley Cup riot, and it lost $450,000 worth of merchandise.
Powell says two of his employees are still receiving treatment for the trauma they experienced that night as rioters stormed the store.
