VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Construction is now underway at an affordable housing project at Broadway and Fraser in Vancouver.
The 103 units are expected to be finished by September, 2013.
“The supportive housing site, run by the Vancouver Native Housing Society and the Broadway Youth Resource Centre, [will have] 103 units there of supportive and social housing,” explains Councillor Kerry Jang.
“It’s set up for the local-area homeless who were there initially, as well as youth in dire circumstances. It will bring some security to the area and ensure that we take the people who are homeless in the area, hopefully, off the street for good,” he adds.
It was once the site of a HEAT shelter, which has since moved closer to Mount St Joseph’s Hospital.
The project isn’t all smiles, though; neighbours are worried the tenants will have addiction or mental health issues, with limited support services.
