Canadians love to text!

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Last year, Canadians sent about 2,500 text messages every second, for a total of 78 billion!

That number is a 40 per cent jump from 2010, when just over 56 billion texts were sent. News1130 hit the streets of Vancouver to find out who is behind the increase.

You might assume the younger generation is responsible for the uptick. But we spoke with some older folks who say they’ve had to jump on the texting bandwagon, just to keep up with those darn kids.

“I definitely text more, although it’s not my preference. I prefer to call, but everybody texts so I have to although it takes me forever to text,” says one man.

“I would talk more if it were cheap, but I’ve learned to text because it’s so expensive [to talk],” adds a woman.

“The younger generation grew up with texting,” explains one user. “My generation grew up more with talking voice-to-voice and I think it’s just one of those generational things that we’re trying to get used to.”

The numbers were put together by the Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association, which also found the number of MMS messages — which include pictures, video, or audio — hit 103 million last year.

The number of personal text messages sent every year has quadrupled since 2008 and is up nearly 20 times over 2006’s total of a measly 4.3 billion.
