Port Moody votes to ban shark fin soup

By

PORT MOODY (NEWS1130) – You can still buy a bowl of shark fin soup at restaurants across the Lower Mainland, but soon Port Moody will be the first community in BC to ban its sale.

The move has unanimous support from council.

Port Moody Councillor Gerry Nuttall says he’s not aware of any restaurants selling shark fins in his community, but the bylaw being drafted will stop them from setting up shop. He says it’s about taking a stand against cruelty, and supporting shark populations.

“They’re being decimated, and they’re being cruelly destroyed. They’re cutting off the fins and letting them sink to the bottom, and that’s just animal cruelty,” believes Nuttall.

He adds a ban is the best way to address the problem. “Any change creates controversy, but if in the end some good comes of it then we all have to deal with it.”

He expects others to follow Port Moody, suggesting the issue could be brought to the attention of the Union of BC Municipalities later this year.

“It just happens that we are the first in BC, but I’m certain that many more will follow if they haven’t already started to look at it.”

Other Canadian cities, including Toronto and Mississauga, have already instituted similar bans.
