Look out for “greenwashing”

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Ahead of Earth Day this weekend, here’s a warning if you buy environmentally-friendly products: watch for “greenwashing.”

There are companies that are lying about being environmentally-safe. Gillian Deacon, author of “There’s Lead In Your Lipstick“, is frustrated that they just want to appear to be green.

“Knowing that’s an important criteria and value for Canadian consumers, they don’t actually do the real work to change their practices or their ingredient formulas. They just want to trick you into thinking they’re green,” says Deacon.

To avoid “greenwashing,” make sure you read the labels and do a little research before buying products.

Deacon also suggests you be your own advocate. “Support companies that are taking into consideration your children, their children… on down the line into the future; their health and well-being and that of the planet.”

Earth Day is celebrated Sunday in 192 countries around the world.
