U.N. Security Council approves resolution to send more observers to Syria

By

The United Nations Security Council has unanimously approved a resolution that will expand the number of observers in Syria from 30 to 300.

The council also demanded an immediate halt to the violence that has escalated since a cease-fire that was supposed to take effect more than a week ago.

The resolution gives UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon the authority to decide when to deploy the additional observers.

One of the key developments that will guide Ki-Moon’s decision will likely be the consolidation of the cease-fire.

He has accused Syrian President Bashar Assad of failing to honour the agreed upon cease-fire

The resolution ends a European threat of non-military sanctions, which would have possibly been imposed had Assad failed to withdraw troops and heavy weapons from towns and cities in the nation.
