Double fatal crash on Highway 1 near the Cassiar Tunnel

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Two people are dead after an early morning crash near the Cassiar Tunnel.

Shortly after 1:30 a.m., police responded to a call that a car had crashed near an embankment just north of the Cassiar Tunnel. Once on scene, police found a male driver who had been ejected from the car, with the female passenger still in the vehicle. Police confirm both died at the scene.

Investigators believe the car smashed through a concrete barricade on the Highway 1 on-ramp near the Cassiar Connector, slid down an embankment, coming to rest on the edge of Highway 1 below.

This morning, investigators could be seen circling the lone vehicle that was sitting on the shoulder of the highway just metres from the McGill Street exit.

The two bodies were covered by a white tarp. They have since been taken away.

Police say at this early stage, it appears speed was a factor however it’s not known if alcohol was involved.

Police are now working with the Coroner to identify the victims.

If you witnessed this crash, Vancouver Police are asking you to call 604-717-3012 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

These are Vancouver’s sixth and seventh traffic-related deaths this year.
