Another event cancelled due to the teachers’ dispute

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Another high profile cancellation due to the ongoing teachers’ dispute.

There won’t be a BC High School Golf Championship this year as the event has been cancelled. Unionized teachers have withdrawn extracurricular activities, such as coaching, as part of their job action.

“We’re probably talking approximately 400 student athletes that would make it to the provincials, and then of course, there are the zone qualifiers,” says BC High School Sports Executive Director Sue Keenan.

“My understanding is the majority of students, at least in the Lower Mainland portion of the province, have had an opportunity to do some golfing this year.” adds Keenan. “A lot of them were involved with club and golf academy activities, so they’ll continue on. There just won’t be, unfortunately, a provincial, which of course is very disappointing.”

About 10,000 students are still waiting to hear whether the BC Track and Field Championships will be cancelled.

“They are canvassing every single zone in the province to see where they’re at in terms of numbers, and I should have a pretty good answer by next week,” Keenan says.  “We’re taking our time with track and field. It’s not scheduled to run until the end of June.”

Earlier this week, the BC High School Mountain Biking Championship was cancelled.

Rugby, Tennis, Girls Soccer and Badminton are still a go.
