At least three months before booze allowed in movie theatres

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – You’ll still have to wait until at least the summer to have a drink in a movie theatre in this province, and you’ll probably have to drive to specific places to do so. Only four companies have submitted applications.

Movie theatres wanting the rights will go through a process similar to a bar or restaurants, says Minister Rich Coleman. “It can be anywhere from three to 12 months, depending on the local government and the time frame there.”

He tells us it also depends what type of process the city puts the theatres through.

“We do the licensing but the consultation is up to the local government. If they support the application, [they’ll then have to] gather interviews from local residents,” explains Coleman.

Kyle Moffatt with Cineplex isn’t anticipating any problems with the application sent in for its VIP Lounge in Coquitlam. “Provided we do get approved, you will be able to have a glass of wine or a beer while watching the latest summer blockbuster.”

Right now, they are only able to deliver mocktails to your seat.

“It’s not just about having a drink in the auditorium; it is about the entire experience,” says Moffatt.
