Expo Line power rail being replaced this summer

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Whether it’s your roof or the tires on your car, it’s a fact of life; all things eventually wear out.

After years of use, it’s time for the Expo Line to get a boost of power to its rail system. A 40-kilometre stretch of rail that supplies the vehicles with power so they can travel will be replaced in sections.

Jennifer Siddon with SkyTrain says the already-funded $33-million project hasn’t been done before. “What we’re doing is simply replacing some of the original power rails that need to be replaced; it’s simply time to replace it after more than 25 years of good service.”

She explains without the power rail, the trains won’t move; it’s an upgrade that will cause disruptions during off-peak hours.

The project is expected to happen in the summer and the work will happen in the evenings when ridership is lower. However, travellers can expect delays while a single track is being used between some stations.
