Long and exhausting investigation after sawmill blast

PRINCE GEORGE (NEWS1130) – The investigation at the Lakeland Mill will be a tedious one for Prince George firefighters.

Fire Chief John Lane tells us it could take several months before a cause of the blast can be determined. He points to the Burns Lake mill site, which was only just turned over to the landowner following the January explosion.

“It is a slow, methodical, safety-oriented process that needs to be absolutely thorough. You cannot go back and do it over again,” he explains.

He notes burn patterns will be of particular interest. “[We will take] a look at the overall site first and then proceed from the area of least damage to the area of the most damage.”

Lane explains that process gives them more clues to work with. “It helps us point a direction to determine the area of origin.”

Two men have died after an explosion and fire at the mill Monday night.
