Driver lucky to be alive after horrific crash: VPD

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – A driver is lucky to be alive after a horrific early morning crash in Vancouver.

It happened on Cambie Street near McGuigan Avenue around 4 a.m.

Vancouver Police say a high-end Audi was speeding south on Cambie, when it passed through West 33rd Road, entering a curve. The driver lost control, hitting a pole on the west side of the street, splitting the car in half.

“The vehicle he [the driver] was travelling in went diagonally through a pole from the front passenger side to the rear driver side,” explains VPD Cst. Jeff Shell. “Within about an inch or two inches, he would have been hit by the pole and probably would have killed himself. If anybody else had been in the vehicle, they would have been dead.”

The driver managed to escape as the car caught fire. When police arrived on the scene, they found the man sitting nearby. He was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Police say speed and alcohol are believed to be factors in this crash.

If you saw this collision, police would like you to call them at 604-717-3012.
