Teachers’ dispute puts track championship up in the air

BURNABY (NEWS1130) – We’ll find out this week if another sporting event will be cancelled because of the teachers’ dispute.

The BC High School Track and Field Championships are in jeopardy after unionized teachers withdrew from extracurricular activities, such as coaching, as part of their job action.

The event is scheduled for early June at Swangard Stadium in Burnaby, with 10,000 kids able to compete.

BC’s Education Minister George Abbott says it will take parent volunteers to make sure the event isn’t cancelled.

“I’d like it go ahead very much as someone who participated extensively in track and field when I was young. This is a very important event,” believes Abbott. “In instances like this, parents can play a hugely important role. They should be offering to step up too.”

A decision on the event is expected before Wednesday.

Last week, the BC High School Mountain Biking and Golf Championships were cancelled.

Rugby, Tennis, Girls Soccer and Badminton are still a go.
