Allegiant Air is expanding its presence at Bellingham airport

BELLINGHAM (NEWS1130) – A growing airline of choice for many BC vacationers is planting deeper roots in Washington State: Allegiant Air is expanding its presence at Bellingham airport.

The airline is looking to construct its own building near the airport’s control tower, for office space, storage and a rest area for its flight crew.

Ken Oplinger with the Bellingham Chamber of Commerce says those who’ve suggested Allegiant is here today, gone tomorrow, have got it wrong.

“They first came to Bellingham’s market, they offered a couple of flight to Vegas, they’ve now got close to 50 flights a week come out of Bellingham to a number of different destinations,” he explains. “They’re acknowledging through the construction of this new facility that they plan to be here long-term”

Oplinger says the airport is in the middle of a substantial three phase expansion, which will eventually include a new check-in and baggage claim area.

Last month, Bellingham Airport set a new departure record with 52,872 passengers. That beat the old record of more than 51,000 set in July of 2011.

Thirty-thousand of those March passengers flew Allegiant Air.
