Parks Canada hit by latest federal job cuts

By

OTTAWA – Another four-thousand federal employees received job warnings, Monday. This is the third round of job cuts since the March budget.

Parks Canada was the prime target for these latest cuts, with close to half of all notices focused on that department. The cuts could result in a loss of about 640 positions.

Although the cuts may not have an impact this summer, the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) warns that they could lead to shorter seasons for national parks and historic sites as well as fewer jobs in rural communities.

John Gordon of the PSAC said these cuts keep getting deeper.

“We are astounded by how quickly and mercilessly this government is moving to put people out of work and cut the services Canadians across the country rely on,” said Gordon.

NDP Leader Thomas Mulcair said the widespread cuts are putting Canada’s economy at risk.

“Part of the reason that we are going through a double dip recession now in Europe is that we cut back too quickly on stimulus and we started cutting the civil service jobs too quickly. That’s exactly what we’re under threat of seeing here in Canada,” Mulcair explained.

It may take several months before the official word on which positions will be safe and which will be cut, gets to workers.

Officials say not everyone who received a notice will be losing their job.

Some other departments hit this round of job cuts include correctional services, human resources, transport, and Stats Canada.

Over the few months just under 12-thousand employees have received notices.
