TransLink’s bike and ride program expands

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – TransLink reps call it their “best kept secret”. We call them bike lockers, and there are now more of them in the Lower Mainland than ever before.

There are three new stations fitted with  bike and ride lockers – 29th Avenue, VCC-Clark and Surrey Central Station. That brings the total to 27 SkyTrain stations with the lockers and six additional bus exchanges.

Drew Snider says half are used during the winter months, while nearly two thirds are occupied come summer. “They are secure. They are quite economical. They can help you make that combination between riding your bike and then switching over to the transit system.”

Snider thinks many people who regularly take transit don’t even know they are there. “They are kind of like concrete pill-boxes. You have space to put your bike in there and then lock the entire door.”

Snider explains how they are considering expanding even further. “The contractor who runs our bike lockers has acquired the distribution rights to these ‘park-it-heres’. They hold up to 50 bikes.”

That system is being used in Melbourne, Australia. It requires less size, therefore increasing the capacity. Riders would be able to use their transit pass cards for access. That project has not yet been approved.

The current secure lockers cost $10 a month, with a three month minimum or $100 dollars for the year.

Snider advises now is a good time to start your booking.
