Mint says TransLink had enough time to adjust to new coins

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The Royal Canadian Mint says everyone, including TransLink, has had plenty of time to get ready for the roll out of new lighter toonies and loonies.

SkyTrain ticket vending machines aren’t accepting the new coins and TransLink says they asked for new coins, but they never received the sample coins to test in their machines.

Alex Reeves with the Canadian Mint says companies have been in the loop about the changes all along. “We were talking with them throughout the implementation of these new changes, and the vending industry is very well prepared to accept these new coins.”

Reeves says in fact, the discussion has gone back as far as 2009. “Honestly we’ve been talking a long time about this. We’ve hosted round tables and talked to associations and manufacturers and did our best to get the message out.”

Until things are good to go, you’ll have to use other coins, debit or credit card.
