Burnaby RCMP hunting for driver in hit and run

BURNABY (NEWS1130) – Burnaby RCMP are hoping you can help them find a dark Honda CRV with front-end damage. It was involved in a late night hit and run that left a cyclist very hurt on the side of the road.

It happened around 11 pm eastbound on Lougheed near Sperling Avenue.

Inspector Tim Shields claims the CRV came up behind the the cyclist.

“The witness observed the cyclist actually flying through the air. When it talks about the impact of that significance, there is absolutely no way that the driver of the CRV would not have known they actually struck someone.”

The driver of the CRV stopped momentarily but then took off. A driver following stuck around to call 911 and help the cyclist.

Shields says the rider of the bike is in hospital with serious injuries. He was not able to communicate with medical staff and was not carrying ID, so he was not identified until this morning.

“In cases like these, often the driver didn’t intend to strike the pedestrian or cyclist but in a moment of panic, they take off. But now they may have second thoughts about that decision,” adds Sheilds. “We hope they reconsider their actions and do the right thing and come forward to police.”

The CRV is described as dark in colour and from 2002-2006. Investigators have been scouring the scene for hours trying to find any evidence from the suspect vehicle.

Anyone who may have witnessed this collision or has information as to the identity of the suspect vehicle and its driver, is asked to call the Burnaby RCMP at 604-294-7922.
