Pitching a tent proving popular in BC this year

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130)  -You’re stuck with mostly first-come-first-serve camping if your May long weekend plans take you under the stars. Pitching a tent is proving to be popular in BC this year.

Most reservations at BC Parks are taken, with a handful of sites left for those lucky enough to get one if they just show up.

Private campgrounds are filling up too, not just for the May long weekend but the entire camping season.

Paul Lionello owns Wright’s Beach Camp on Skaha Lake in Penticton. He expects his and other nearby campgrounds will be packed thanks to nicer weather, and business is still looking up.

“Ultimately the majority of our sites are filled during the summer months when our kids are out of school,” says Lionello.  “Advance bookings are looking good, though.  As long as the weather’s good, those sites will fill.  Last year at the beginning of July, the weather was awful and we certainly noticed a drop in that timeframe.”

This year, Lionello expects to do just as well as summers past, if not better.

BC Parks, meanwhile, are on track to welcome more than two million campers by the end of 2012.
