Not enough drivers are prepared with an emergency kit: BCAA

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Now that the weather warms up, more and more of you are heading out on the road – possibly for a road trip.

As a result, it’s also a time of year where we see a spike in crashes.

The other problem is not enough drivers are prepared with an emergency kit when they head out. A suggested kit should include a cell phone, water, food, a flashlight and blanket.

Allan Lamb with BCAA says 20 per cent of our serious injury crashes are caused by fatigue. He also suggests being extra organized before hitting the road.

“Let somebody know when you’re leaving, what your destination is, what time you’re expected to arrive, make sure you have a cell phone.”

A recent survey found 63 per cent of Canadians don’t feel safe in their own car — not having the confidence to know what to do when something goes wrong.

Every month, 28 people are killed in traffic crashes in our province.
