Vancouver could see more bike lanes for cyclists

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Cycling to work could get easier this week if council passes a plan for more bike lanes.

Vancouver City Councillor Heather Deal expects the Transportation Plan to go through. The plan sees a number of cycling routes expand in East Vancouver and a new bike lane in Kitsilano.

“We’re investing $3-million in the next few years for capital upgrades, which is a tiny fraction of the amount that we spend on roads for cars,” explains Deal. “It’s an amount that reflects our desire to really make it safe and convenient and enjoyable to be on a bike.”

In Kitsilano, the busy Point Grey Road will get the new bike lane as it’s a route that cyclists take to avoid the Kits hills.

“The Kitsilano area is the highest bike transportation area to the downtown core. That’s where we see the highest spike in the number of people who choose cycling to get downtown from home. So it’s not students, it’s actually people who are commuting to work.”

Vancouver’s Transportation Plan is expected to pass with it promoting Mayor Gregor Robertson‘s wish for Vancouver to be the greenest city in the world by 2020.

Vancouver is already in the top three, according to a Siemens ranking. Copenhagen and San Francisco are the top two.
