Dempster misses out on chance to earn first win of 2012

ST. LOUIS, MO (NEWS1130) – Gibsons’ Ryan Dempster (0-1) appeared to be on his way to his first win of the 2012 MLB season, but he allowed four runs in the sixth inning and earned a no-decision in the Chicago Cubs’ 6-4 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals.

Dempster looked like he would leave the game in position to earn his first victory of the year as he entered the sixth inning with a 4-0 lead. The Cardinals got their bats going in the sixth, as Dempster surrendered four runs on five hits after allowing just four hits in the first five innings.

Dempster finished off the sixth inning but was replaced by Shawn Camp for the start of the seventh. Camp got the win as Alfonso Soriano singled home the eventual winning run in the top of the eighth.

The 35-year-old Dempster has made five starts this season and has an ERA of 1.74 with 41 strikeouts and just 11 walks.
