Warm weather lifts forest fire risk to moderate

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) -The warmer, drier weather has finally arrived in BC, and with that comes an increased risk of forest fires.

The BC Wildlife Management Branch has increased the forest fire danger to moderate. That means forest fuels are drying and there is an increased risk of surface fires starting. You’re asked to carry out any forest activities with caution.

Fire Information Officer Marg Drysdale says long weekend campers need to be extra careful.

“We’re asking people, even at this time of year, to just be careful out there. You know that a campfire is a metre by a metre. We want people to be safe.”

“Last year we did not have a campfire ban in place because the weather didn’t call for it and we know that people weren’t generally lighting campfires that were a danger. We are hoping it will be the same this year,” adds Drysdale.

She is also warning people who live in rural areas to check their properties for fire hazards like dry brush.
