Women’s soccer team hoping to bring home gold

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The Canadian Women’s soccer team is hoping to raise the Maple Leaf at the end of the Summer Olympics in London.

The team is among the top-rated squads in the world but has had trouble at the big tournaments, most recently at the Women’s World Cup in Germany.

Burnaby native and striker Christine Sinclair says she enjoys the pressure that comes with being ranked 7th in the world.

“I remember in Beijing, for us to get on the podium would have been a pretty long shot so I’m glad things are changing.”

Despite the games still being three months away, Sinclair says the team is fired up.

“I think for our group it’s pretty easy. It’s not like we’re together for a year straight. It will be about three or four months total. You have players fighting for positions as only 18 people can go to London and we have about 26 possible [players], so people are fighting for a spot.”

Canada will be in tough this summer as they’re in a group with Japan, Sweden and South Africa. The Japanese squad is ranked #1 in the world after winning the Women’s World Cup. The Swedes are also a top team, ranked 5th.
