Bragging rights on the line for Whitecaps and Toronto FC

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The Vancouver Whitecaps host Toronto FC tonight at BC Place in the first leg of this year’s Amway Canadian Championship final.

The Whitecaps have come close to winning the title in the past. This year, they could have their best shot against a Toronto side that has not won in Major League Soccer league play.

Toronto is after a fourth-straight Voyageurs Cup title and will be playing their first-ever match at BC Place. Whitecaps FC reached the final by defeating FC Edmonton 5-1 on aggregate following last week’s 3-1 victory in the second leg at BC Place. Toronto FC won its semi-final, beating the Montreal Impact 2-0 on aggregate following a 2-0 second-leg win in Toronto last week.

This series is a rematch of a painful final for Vancouver last year. Lighting and rain forced a replay of the second leg, which was won by Toronto.

Toronto will be without captain Torsten Frings (shoulder), and they’re missing starting fullback Richard Eckersley due to a suspension.

Game time at BC Place is 7 p.m. The second leg will be played at Toronto’s BMO Field next Wednesday.  The winner of the series will represent Canada in the 2012-13 CONCACAF Champions League.
