Hassli pulls out tie for Whitecaps against TFC

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Whitecaps FC striker Eric Hassli scored on a rocket right-footed volley in extra time to salvage a 1-1 draw with Toronto at BC Place in the first leg of the Voyageurs Cup.

Each team had a quality scoring chance in the opening 45 minutes, but the score was 0-0.

TFC opened the scoring in the 66th minute on a header by Ryan Johnson off of a sweet feed by Julian De Guzman.

Hassli came on as substitute in the 56th minute. Defender Alain Rochat chipped in a lovely cross from just outside the box, which the French striker hit flush with his right boot to tie the game in extra time. It was Hassli’s fourth goal in five games.

The defending champions from Toronto return home for the second game next Wednesday with a valuable away goal.
If the two game total goal series is tied, the first tie breaker is the squad which has the most away goals.

The winner of the series will represent Canada in the CONCACAF Champions League.

The Caps are back in MLS play on Saturday afternoon at home against Sounders FC from Seattle.
